Redevelopment Authority

Chilton's Redevelopment Authority (RDA) was formed in October 2002 to actively participate in the redevelopment activities in the city's central business districts.

RDA Objectives

A. Create an overall, long-term plan for Chilton’s Uptown and Downtown Business Districts (Main Street and surrounding areas) that:

  • Incorporates an overall look and common theme/cluster;
  • Maximizes the area’s strengths (the river walkway, historical buildings, city hall, parking lots, small-town ambiance); and
  • Can be produced in phases
  • Accomplishes adequate parking
  • Promotes safe neighborhoods

B. Promote the development of Chilton’s Uptown and Downtown Business Districts primarily as a facilitator by working with developers and entrepreneurs to invest in these areas and by working with property and business owners to encourage maintenance and improvement of their properties and businesses. This also includes:

  1. Develop a source of revenues and provide grants and economic assistance
  2. Capitalize on tourism dollars by creating destination centers
  3. Work with city and county stakeholders and community groups

C. Eliminate blight and increase the valuation of property and tax base with better use including

  1. Strict enforcement of existing municipal codes
  2. Creating new requirements to support goals

D. Encourage retail and commercial business growth

E. Keep open lines of communication between the RDA and the community.
